To make life easier and a little more comfortable for you and your loved
ones, you have invested your hard-earned money in household electrical
appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens,
aircos, fans and the like as well as in electronic equipment such as TV
and stereo sets, VCRs,, computers, etc. To protect these from damage
caused by electrical disturbances such as spikes or surges, it is wise
to:
Purchase a
plug-in, high quality surge protector. These cost only a fraction of the
individual equipment or appliances you have at home or at work, and are
available in most hardware and electronic stores.
Unplug your
electrical appliances and electronic equipment during lightning storms
or during prolonged absence from home such as whenever you are going
away on vacation and your home is left unoccupied.
Repair or discard
frayed electrical chords and wiring. These could cause short-circuits
that may damage your sensitive equipment |

If
too much voltage can damage your electronic equipment or other
household appliances, so can too little or no voltage at all. Severe
weather conditions, accidental damage to G.E.B.E. poles and power
lines, as well as indoor short circuits can cause disturbances that
could result in very low voltage or power outage (or blackouts).
While
you can often replace or repair an equipment that has suffered
physical damage, you may find it more difficult to replace or
retrieve data lost in, for example a blackout. To prevent such a
loss, it is advisable to install an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
unit. This gadget, available at several electronic stores, provides
disturbance-free electrical supply to your computer (and other
electronic equipment that use memory such as fax machines, VCRs,
etc.). It has a special battery backup that provides reserve power
for a specific period of time (up to 30 minutes or even more) when
there is a power outage, thus allowing you sufficient time to put
final touches to whatever you are working on, save your data, and
turn off your equipment safely. A UPS is a good investment and
almost a necessary one for computer users. |

In
the event your household electrical equipment is damaged during a
blackout, document such damages in writing and contact G.E.B.E.
immediately to initiate the process of replacement of the damaged
parts. |
