Sudden
Power Outage at Home
•
If you experience power outage at home, check first to ensure that
it does not affect the neighborhood in general. If your neighbors
have power, then check for blown internal fuses or tripped breakers.
If this is not the case, then call G.E.B.E. Emergency service and
notify them of your problem.
•
Do not open a G.E.B.E. fuse box or meter box yourself. Apart from
the potential danger it poses, it is against the law.
•
If you cannot determine the source of the outage, call 542-2213 during
office hours or 544-3100 (24 hours). Give the G.E.B.E. dispatcher your
name, complete address and telephone number and explain the nature
of the problem you are experiencing to him.
•
Turn off all electric appliances and electronic equipment,, leaving
only a single light or radio on to know when power has been
restored.
•
Keep refrigerators and freezers closed to lessen the chance of food
spoiling during a power outage.
•
Do not go near damaged meters, downed power lines or any damage to
electric service. Let the professionals at G.E.B.E. handle it.
•
Keep children away from playing around power lines,
electrical sockets and exposed electrical wiring.
•
Be extremely careful when digging a sewer line. If you do not see
any power lines around, these could be buried underground. Call G.E.B.E. for advise or a site plan of where cables may be buried.
•
Confirm that you have paid up your electricity bills.
•
Pay attention to the media for any notices of load-shedding. This is
however, rather infrequent.
