Hurricane Earl Restoration

August 31, 2010–Rough seas continue to cause a reduced power supply. The Cay Bay Power Plant is running its two radiator-cooled engines at full capacity, however the sea-cooled engines are currently offline. GEBE is urging residents to minimize the use of electricity especially air conditioners at this time to reduce the load shedding as much as possible.

GEBE Repairs Water Tanks

June 17, 2010–GEBE has begun a specialized project to repair 5 water tanks between the period of June 1 to July 15, 2010.

GEBE Hosts CARILEC Disaster Management Conference

March 25, 2010—GEBE will be hosting the CARILEC Disasters Coordinators Meeting from March 25 to 26, 2010. A total of 13 people from 8 different islands including St. Maarten, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Dominica, Grenada, Curacao, Antigua, Barbados, CARILEC and Osmose Utility Services.

GEBE Water Rated Among Best in Water Taste Test

March 24, 2010–As part of the international World Water Day celebrations that were held on March 22, 2010, GEBE held a blind water taste test with customers to promote the quality of drinking water and determine whether customers can pick GEBE water out of a line up.

GEBE Inaugurates New Engines

March 12, 2010–Utilities company GEBE Managing Director William Brooks calls the inauguration of the power plant expansion and the two new 11.3-mega watt engines as a triumph for the power plant’s employees and the people of St. Maarten.

Engines in Full Production

January 21, 2010—The two new 11.3 MW generators have to complete a few final tests before the engines will be officially turned over to GEBE. The engines are running to full production while this testing phase continues. It is expected that the final tests will be completed within two weeks.

GEBE Update Hotel Managers

November 13, 2009—GEBE representatives attended the SHTA General Managers’ Retreat on Friday, November 13 to update Hotel Managers on the challenges that are being faced in the GEBE operations on St. Maarten, Saba and Statia as well as projects and strategic plans that address these challenges on the short, medium and long term.

GEBE 49th Anniversary

September 16, 2009–NV GEBE is celebrating its 49th anniversary of providing electricity to St. Maarten, Saba and Statia. The company was established on September 16, 1960.

GEBE Management Training

June 18, 2009–GEBE management, supervisor and department heads completed the final round of trainings in the Management Executive Program conducted by Dr. Charles Cambridge and Mrs. Miriam Martinez of Productivity Managements Associates Inc. A total of 74 employees completed the training program that was held at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort from June 1 to June 12, 2009.

World Environment Day

June 5, 2009–June 5th 2009 marked World Environment Day which is celebrated by millions around the world as a time to reflect on our impact on the environment and create awareness about the fight against global warming.

GEBE Saves Some Green

June 3, 2009–GEBE has combined the electricity and water bills onto one sheet of paper reduce the company’s environmental impact, thereby reducing the amount of paper used per customer. Customers with both electricity and water accounts will now receive their bills and customer newsletter in one envelope.

Caribbean Water Association Launched

May 27, 2009–The Water Platform of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba (WNAA) was officially founded last week as the Caribbean Water Association.

New Pond Island Substation

April 6, 2009–GEBE signed a contract with N.V. BetonBouw Caribbean Construction (BCC) for the construction of the new Pond Island Substation.

7 Employees Attend Training

APril 5, 2009–Seven GEBE employees attended the Professional Supervisor Training at the UTS Training & Development Center given by trainer David McGregor. The training covered planning, leading, communicating with employees, colleagues and management, team building and motivation.

Ten E-Billing Winners

April 02, 2009–Ten lucky winners of the GEBE website promotion have won a goody bag for signing up for the GEBE E-billing service via the new GEBE website at www.nvgebe.com. The E-billing promotion ran as part of the GEBE website launch on March 27, 2009.

GEBE Assists UNESCO-IHE Water Study

April 2, 2009–The GEBE Water Laboratory assisted the Dutch division of the UNESCO-IHE with a Quick Scan water study on St. Maarten.

GEBE Employees Converge

March 30, 2009–At the request of their union UFA, a group of some 30 GEBE workers led by UFA president, Francis Olivacci, converged on the GEBE parking lot on Monday morning, March 30, 2009 to address the issue of the impasse on the negotiations concerning the financial package for the period 2008.

GEBE Goes Online

March 27, 2009–GEBE launched its new website on March 27, 2009 as part of the company’s vision to improve service and operate in a more customer-oriented manner. GEBE Managing Director, William Brooks, was on hand to officially unveil the new site and demonstrate its functionalities to the media.

Control System Triggers Blackout

March 15, 2009–A fault in the DC voltage control system at the Cay Bay power plant caused a total blackout on St. Maarten early Sunday morning. The blackout lasted a total of nine hours.

Feeder Cable Short Circuit

March 03, 2009–A short circuit in the main feeder cable leading to the GEBE Substation in Zagersgut resulted in a short power outage that affected a significant part of the island. Power was restored quickly to most areas, as the technicians worked diligently at locating and repairing the damage to the feeder cable.

Fuel Clause Relief Ends

March 2, 2009–Per March 1, 2009, the fuel clause relief of 9 cents per kilowatt-hour has been removed from the utility bills.

February 20, 2009 - A team of GEBE managers were among a group of regional electricity companies that attended the West Indies Power Geothermal Conference in Nevis on Friday, February 20, 2009.

February 12, 2009—GEBE managing director, ir. William Brooks, presented the GEBE donation check to University of St. Martin board member, Danny Ramchandani, on February 12, 2009, making GEBE one of the University’s Partners in the construction and upgrade of the university campus.

Maho Connects to GEBE Grid

February 9, 2009–GEBE technicians finalized the electricity connection for the Maho Group of Companies on Friday, February 6, 2009, as part of the electricity supply agreement that was signed on January 30, 2009.

February 1, 2009–GEBE reached a new milestone with the signing of an electricity supply agreement with the Maho Group of Companies. The contract was signed by ir. William Brooks GEBE Managing Director, and Saro Spadaro President & Chief Executive Office (CEO) of the Maho Group of Companies.

January 20, 2009–The winners of the GEBE Christmas Lighting Competition were presented their prizes by GEBE managing director, William Brooks.

Saba Lighting Winners

January 17, 2009–GEBE announced the winners of the GEBE Christmas Lighting Competition in Saba during its annual Staff New Year’s Party on January 17, 2009. Saba received a record number of participants in the 2008 Christmas Lighting Competition who were wowing residents with their festive displays throughout the month of December.

Water Production

Most of us are so accustomed to drawing water from a tap that we quickly forget that our faucets are connected by long miles of pipe to a supply somewhere.

St. Maarten History

On September 16, 1960, the NV Overzeese Gas- en Electriciteitsmaatschappij (OGEM BV) established the NV Gemeenschappelijk Electriciteitsbedrijf St. Maarten (GESM) in Curacao to exploit electricity in St. Maarten.

Statia History

GEBE Statia is currently managed by ing. Fred Cuvelay. It has a peak demand of 1.9 MW and serves 1,533 connections.

Saba History

GEBE Saba is currently managed by Charles Dexter Johnson. The power plant has a peak of 1,4 MW and serves 1,086 meters.

Back Street Underground Cabling

GEBE has been working to install the electricity cables under the ground on Back Street in Philipsburg as part of the Philipsburg Beautification project.

Red Pond Cabling

The Red Pond Project is providing the new developments and houses in that area with electricity and water.

Electricity Distribution

GEBE distributes electricity through high tension and low tension cables to the entire Dutch St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius.

Shareholders Foundation

NV GEBE was transferred from the central government to the shareholder foundation which is owned by St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius.

Supervisory Board of Directors

Saba and St. Eustatius each have one representative on the Supervisory Board of Directors while St. Maarten has three.

Executive Management Team

The executive management team (EMT) is lead by the Managing Director and consists of the managers of the main functional areas.
